Notre Dame’s Father Hesburgh named among the most caring people in America

He’s featured in Family Theater Productions’ latest documentary

December 20, 2005

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Father Theodore Hesburgh, CSC, president emeritus of the University of Notre Dame and the subject of Family Theater Productions’ latest documentary, was among 12 people, seven adults and five teenagers, who received 2005 National Caring Awards from the Caring Institute on Dec. 5 in Washington, D.C. Caring Award winners are inducted into the Hall of Fame for Caring Americans, located three blocks east of the U.S. Capitol, at 320 A Street, NE, Washington, DC. www.caring-institute.org

This is the latest in many honors that Father Hesburgh, 88, has received. He was received the nation's highest civilian award, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, from then President Bill Clinton and he has received more honorary degrees, 150, than anyone else. He served as Notre Dame’s president from 1952-1987, and he also served on 16 U.S. presidential commissions and represented the Vatican on several commissions and councils.

Inspired by Mother Teresa, the Caring Institute was founded in 1985 to honor and promote the values of caring, integrity, and public service by identifying extraordinarily caring people and holding them up as role models for others to emulate. Former U.S. Senator Robert J. Dole, chairman of the institute’s Board of Trustees, announced the 2005 winners. www.caring-institute.org

Father Hesburgh is featured in “God, Country, Notre Dame: The Story of Father Ted Hesburgh, CSC,” which had its premier broadcast at Noon (EST), Sunday, Nov. 6 on The Hallmark Channel as a special presentation of Faith and Values Media. The program is also available on DVD.

The documentary’s producer, Family Theater Productions, is a Catholic media production outlet in Hollywood. Its legendary founder Servant of God Father Patrick Peyton, CSC, produced hundreds of radio and TV programs and coined the slogan, "The family that prays together stays together."

Family Theater Productions is a member of Holy Cross Family Ministries, Easton, Mass., which seeks to promote and support the spiritual well-being of the family. Sponsored by the Congregation of Holy Cross, other member ministries are Family Rosary, which Father Peyton founded in 1942, Family Rosary International with offices in 17 countries, and the Father Peyton Family Institute, in Easton, and in Lima, Peru.

Additional information about the documentary, the broadcast and/or acquiring the DVD is available at the Holy Cross Family Ministries online store or by calling toll-free 1-800-404-8350.
