“ We were going to play Alabama in the Sugar Bowl and it was the first time that the Catholics and the Baptists would be going against one another … both of us were undefeated and … the national championship was on the line …

We were at this dinner and Father Hesburgh walked over and he kind of nudged me. He said, ‘You know’ … ‘I’ve never asked you for anything in these 10 years but,’ he says, ‘it would please me very much if you could win tomorrow.’”
